It is acknowledged by most persons, that natural history cannot be advantageously studied unless we are acquainted with the structure of the objects of our research, or with comparative ana¬ tomy, so called from its comparing the anatomy of other living creatures with that of man. So also the science of geology, which in the present age so much engages the attention of philosophic en¬ quiry, receives great elucidation from the anato¬ mical character of animals. Natural philosophy has derived aid from the investigation of the human structure, particularly from a knowledge of the formation of the eye and the ear; for the eye is an organ or instrument by which vision is performed; it is by its nature ' Dr. Mac'iirttiey.
