Biographical note

British bryologist noted for his book Bryologia Britannica: containing the mosses of Great Britain and Ireland (1855). He collaborated with Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker on Musci Antarctici (1839-43) based on botanical collections from the southern circumpolar regions.
