Birth rates in Collectorates.—The highest birth-rate Was recorded in the district of Dangs (49.4) and the lowest Was in Thana district (20.6). Of the 27 districts of the State, 4 districts recorded birth rates of over 40 per ntille, 18 districts had birth rates ranging between 30 and 40 per mille and 5 between 20 and 30 per mille of estimated population. 16. Births in urban amss.—4The total number of registered births in urban areas during the year Was 362,427 as against 361,375 in 1953, the birth-rates being 29.5 and 30.3, respectively. Among towns high birth rates were recorded in Talegaon Dabhade (60.3), Jambusar (51.6), Beyt (50.9), Borsad (50.4) and Napad Talpad (50.2). Low-birth-rates were recorded in the towns of Naroda (2.2), Ranip (3.6), Kandiwali (5.1) and Bavda(5.7), 17. Births in rural areas.—The total number of births recorded in the rural areas Was 898,398 giving a birth rate of 34.4 per mille as against 890.644 and 34.7 in 1953. High birth-rates Were recorded in the Districts of Dangs (49.4) , East Khandesh and Broach (46.6) each and West Khandesh (43.4). Low birth rates were recorded in the districts of Thana (22.2), Sabarkantha (24.5) , Ahmedabad (28.1) and Poona (28.8). 18. Births in Greater Bombay.—The number of births recorded and the birth-rates in Greater Bombay were 81,643 and 25.4 per mille as against 80,649 and 26.0 per mille respectively in 1953. 19. Births in Cantonments. —Among the six Cantonments, the highest birth-rate Was recorded in Poona Cantonment (28.7) and the lowest in Ahmedabad Cantonment (16.8). 20. Sex ratio in Births.—Of the total births, 652, 955 Were males and 607,870 females. For every 100 female births there were 107 male births. n—m
