Photograph of an illustration from De Materia Medica by Dioscorides, a 6th century Greek manuscript also known as the Juliana Anicia Codex, held by the Austrian National Library, Vienna. The illustration depicts Heuresis, the personification of invention or discovery, presenting the physician Dioscorides Pedanios with a mandrake root, with inscription above and below.
