About this work

Description

On recto pages, mounted photographs of statuettes, jewellery, coins, vessels etc., mostly grave goods, excavated in Cyprus by Major Alexander Palma di Cesnola, and available for study in Holland Park, London, on application to Major di Cesnola at Palma Villa, Woodchurch Road, West Hampstead, London. Text on verso pages includes testimonials from Ernest Renan (fols. 22v-24v), Samuel Birch (fol. 25v), A.H. Sayce (fol. 26v), J.R. Herbert (fol. 27v), W.E. Gladstone and C.W. Dilke (both fol. 52v)

Not the antiquities which General Luigi Palma di Cesnola, brother of the present collector, sold to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The works shown in the present photographs were the property of Edwin Herbert Lawrence, who eventually sold at them at auction in 1883-4, 1888 and 1892 (Goring, loc. cit.)
