About this work

Description

The programme, presented by Professor Janet Thornton, begins by looking at the European Bioinformatics Institute, a bank for biological data from all over Europe (based at the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus Hinxton, Cambridgeshire). This introduction to the EBI includes facts and figures about just how much data is deposited in the EBI and how often people use it to find information. It then outlines the problems faced by the EBI. The solution is ELIXIR; a project that will build a sustainable infrastructure for the storing of biological information. This is followed by a plea for funding to help support the ELIXIR project. The basic outline for ELIXIR’s structure is described. The advantages of a bank for all of this information are then outlined.
