About this work

Description

The man wears a broad belt in which an instrument or weapon (called a "gansjael") is tucked. The woman wears a head covering. "Hier voeg ik nogh by de kleding van eenen zwarten slaef, die in dient was van ons opperhooft. Gy ziet hem verbeelt op. no. 89. Dat gy tusschen het bintsel om zyn lyf ziet steken is een breet geweer, gansjael genaemt. Nogh is hier by, om u te meer genogen te geven, een zwarte slavin, die tee anbringt. Zy wort u in print aengewezen op no. 90." (De Bruyn, op. cit. p. 166)
