About this work

Description

Left, a statue of Saint Ferma in a niche, holding the martyr's palm and a model of a ship: she is the patron saint of Civitavecchia in Italy and one of the protectors of navigators. Centre a man kneeling before the statue holding a purse in one hand and a staff in the other; he has a Maltese cross on his tunic and on his jacket. Right, booty from defeated opponents, marked twice with crescents to indicate that they were Turks. Right background, ships in a harbour, one of them with a coat of arms including a black eagle resembling the Hapsburg emblem. The lettering "Per gratie ricevute" shows that the picture was painted as a votive offering, in thanks for success in navigation or in marine warfare
