About this work

Description

Photomacrograph of the root of an eyelash. Eyelashes are hair found in mammals attached to the eyelids which protect the eyes from debris. The root of an eyelash has an enlarged hair bulb which forms the base of the hair follicle, anchoring the hair into the skin. Eyelashes reduce airflow over the surface of the eyeball which in turn reduces the amount of evaporation from the eye as well as stopping dust and other airborne particles from settling on the surface. Width of image is 0.5 mm.
