About this work

Description

The second in a four-part series, presented by Michael Mosley, in which CGI footage is used to show the workings of the human body. In this part, we see the struggle of existence and how, from birth to death, our bodies perform countless small miracles to keep us alive. A water birth is shown in slow motion, we see the workings of the heart and how our first breath leads to a dramatic reconstruction of the entire circulatory system. Mosley meets people who have adapted their bodies to extreme environments such as Herbert a free-diver who can hold his breath in the depths of the ocean for up to nine minutes, Wim who can swim in glacial lakes which would kill a normal person and Debbie who has lived for ten years on a diet of crisps. We also see the dying process as Gerald, an 84-year-old passes away at him with his family gathered around him.
