Of these children, 46.1% were successfully vaccinated, and in respect of 43.6% vaccination was refused on account of “ Con- scientious Objection ” by the parents, compared to 44.9% and 44.8% respectively for the previous year. Table (II.) shows the effect of the Vaccination Acts in the several districts of the Administrative County during 1933. Encephalitis Lethargica. 8 cases were notified under the Notification Act and Regu- lations, and 5 deaths were reported, compared with 9 and 9 respectively for 1932. Scarlet Fever. There were 651 cases notified, with 3 deaths (Urban 1, Rural 2), during the year, compared with 573 cases with 3 deaths for the previous year. Cases were reported in all but 16 of the sanitary districts. The largest number of cases occurred in Torquay (125 cases) and Plympton St. Mary (91 cases). Diphtheria. There were 184 cases, with 20 deaths, reported during the year, compared with 193 cases, with 17 deaths, for the previous year. The largest number of cases occurred in Plympton St. Mary Rural District (80). Typhoid Fever. There were 21 cases, with 3 deaths, notified during the year, compared with 49 cases and 3 deaths for the previous year. The disease was notified in 16 (Urban 6, Rural 10) of the 51 sanitary districts. Measles. As Measles is not a notifiable disease it is not possible to give the number of cases which occurred in the County, but during the year 803 cases and contacts were excluded from school on account of this disease, compared to 3,377 for 1932, and 4 schools were closed. 5 deaths were registered, compared with 24 for the previous year.
