About this work

Description

Described by Bell as John Doring, "a native of Ireland, a soldier of the Perthshire Fencibles", who "was put on board a transport [ship], and i n walking carlessly, fell down the hatches into the hold". he landed on the tuberosity of the left ischium, resulting in a tumour with enlarged veins. "He was a very rude fellow, had gone into the army with no intention of serving. There was, indeed, no motive in such a case for proposing an operation; but I was sensible that though there had, it would have been vain, he had other objects in view! he would not be cured!"
