Based on Thomas Jevon's The devil of a wife (1686), which was turned into an opera by Coffey and Mottley and later reduced by Theophilus Cibber to one act (here printed as two)--cf. Remarks.
"Printed from the acting copy, with remarks, biographical and critical by D.--G. [i.e. George Daniel] ... as performed at the Theatres Royal, London ... Embellished with a fine engraving, from a drawing taken in the theatre, by Mr. R. Cruikshank."
