About this work

Description

1945-60 Developed in Italy in 1938, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a controversial psychiatric treatment, primarily used for cases of severe depression. An ECT machine transmits electric currents to the brain in timed pulses causing a convulsion or seizure, thought to 'shock' a patient out of a severe mental disorder. Credit: Science Museum, London
