    THE ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY THE TEETH. GENERAL VIEW OF THE STRUCTURE OF THE TEETH. Tue tecth may, in the human subject, be defined’ as distinct organs of a bony structure, attached to the maxillary bones, and formed for the purpose of dividing and comm- nuting the food, preparatory to digestion. Each tooth is anatomically divided into the body or crown,* and the fang or root.t ‘The body must be considered as the essential part—the tooth properly so called—since it performs all the offices for which these organs are produced, as mastication, &c.; the root serves merely for its articulation with that portion of the maxillary bone in which it lies imbedded. The bodies of the teeth are of various forms, according to the particular office which each is destined to per- form.
