![the application by means of a camel-hair brush of dry- alum, borax, or bismuth. If the spots are slow to heal they may be touched with solid nitrate of silver, or with a strong solution of the same (60 grains to the ounce), or with a solution of cupric sulphate (10 grains to the ounce), or zinc sulphate (20 grains to the ounce), or mercuric chloride (I grain to the ounce), or iodo- form may be applied. Ashby and Wright recommend touching the spots with lapis divinus, which is made by fusing together equal parts of cupric sulphate, alum, and potassic nitrate. In cachectic cases tonics must be given internally. Quinine in \- to 2-grain doses with 2 to 5 minims of dilute nitric acid three or four times a day. The diet should be bland but nutritious, and stimulants are freely needed in bad cases. In young children milk and barley water, mixed, should be given, in preference to beef tea, as beef tea and saline solutions may cause smarting of the mouth. Parasitic stomatitis, aphtha;, thrush.— This disease has been confounded with the preceding; it is, however, a special form of inflammation of the mouth due to the development in its mucous membrane of a parasitic, vegetable, confervoid growth, the oidium albicans.
