I turn now to the influence of failure of the muscular apparatus of respiration on the state of the lungs. o In his treatise on diseases of the lungs and pleura, Wilson Fox classifies the causes of collapse of the lungs under the following heads :— (1) Congenital non-expansion. (2) Imperfect power of expanding the thorax. (3) Obstruction of the bronchial tubes and air passages. (4) Pressure on the lung by fluids or solids. (5) Pneumothorax, with a free opening in the chest wall or in the lung. <7 The variety of massive collapse with which we are concerned falls under the second head— imperfect power of expansion—and the greater part of our knowledge concerning it has been derived from the study of cases of paralysis of the diaphragm.
