Vital Statistics.—The birth-rate is 49 per 1,000, the death-rate 41. The infantile death- rate is 230 per 1,000 boru, while that for the city is 131. From diseases of the respiratory organs the death-rate is 9'5 per 1,000; the corresponding rate lor the city is 3'5. Economic Conditions — Failure to Pay Fates.— 1. For Police Purposes.—It is our custom in Glasgow to assess the occupiers of houses of small rentals between £4 and .£10 annually at only one-half the rate levied for certain police purposes on rentals exceeding the latter amount.
