    THE NATURE, CAUSES, AND CONSEQUENCES OF VARIX. 'Although certain portions of the venous system are notoriously more prone than others to dilatation, this infirmity is not confined to any one class or set of veins. Prolonged obstruction to the return of blood from any vein in the body will, sooner or later, cause its branches to enlarge; and so in- variably are difficulties in the transmission of blood and dilatation associated in the relation of cause and effect, that we might, on this ground alone, very safely engage to specify a priori the veins which would be thus affected.
