    which fhall fortune to lye in any notable place of this City, to the noyance and infedlion of paffers by, and flander of this houfe, ye fhall then give know- ledge thereof to the Almoners of this Hofpitall, that they may take fuch order therein as to them fhall be thought meet.” The Beadles were to be also on the watch for any who had been healed in the Hospital, and who should afterwards counterfeit any disease and beg for charity. “ And if ye fhall fortune to find any fo doing, ye fhall immediately commit him, or them, to fome Cage, and give knowledge thereof to the Governors of this houfe.” “ Alfo ye fhall not fuffer any fturdy or idle begger or vagabound, to begge or afk almes within this City of London, or Suburbes of the fame, but yee fhall forthwith commit all fuch to ward, and immediately fignifie the name and furname of him, or them, to the Alderman of that ward, when ye fhall apprehend any fuch begger, or elfe to the Lord Mayor.” Among the list of officers of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital was also, as I have said, a Visitour of the neighbouring prison of Newgate, whose charge was to visit “ All the poor and miferable captives within the Prifon of Newgate, and minifter unto them fuch ordi- nary fervice at times convenient, as is appointed by the King’s Majeftie’s book for ordinary Prayer.
