About this work

Description

In the US there are 3,000,000 obese teenagers. More and more often parents are turning to gastric surgery to solve their children's weight problems. Laura Broach is 13 and weighs 24 stone - she is about to have a gastric bypass operation. Victoria Jordan is 14 and weighs 19 stone - her family are paying for her to have a reversible gastric band operation. However, the long-term physical and psychological effects of the surgery are of course unknown; not to mention the ethical implications of such a young person making a decision that will effect their entire life ahead. Laura's operation is shown in some detail, as is Victoria's. The programme revisits the teenagers 6 months after surgery - they are both 6 stone lighter but are finding it hard to do without the thing they love - food.
