About this work

Description

Centre, Job sits covered with boils among the ashes. Wild boar are in the foreground (as a sign of the dirtiness of the place?). On the left the Sabaeans carry off Job's cattle, as mentioned in the book of Job (1.15) and in Petrarch ("wie auch den frommen Hiob die Sabey sein Herd hinfürten"). One of Petrarch's characters argues that ownership of livestock is not necessarily a blessing
