The painting has been associated with the work of Pieter Huys. Huys painted a number of groups and single figures with their mouths shown open as in this example. The handling of the drapery is not identical but would be in line with studio work. Lorne Campbell, National Gallery, London, suggested Quintin or Jan Massys as the possible artist. David Jaffe of the National Gallery, London, preferred the artist Adriaen Brouwer
