About this work
Description
In the Islamic republic of Iran sex change operations are legal, while homosexuality is punishable by death. In this programme we meet a group of young men as they embark on sexual reassignment surgery - some deciding to go ahead with the operation and others to take their chances as they are; their families and friends contribute. The Iranian government provides grants to cover the medical costs of the surgery and recuperation and they allow the sex of the person to be changed on their birth certificate. However, following surgery, the families of the young men will disown them. There is a follow-up on the young men featured a year later.
