    Appearance of Love and Goodnefs, not only to wretched but undeferving Creatures, that he who will ad upon thole Principles, muft ncceffarily be led by them, into all the Ads of the fame Love and Kindnefs, and he who ads the con¬ trary, whatever he may profefs, is any thing but a true Chriftian. He who fays he loveth God and hates his brother is a liar. From hence therefore we may learn what is the true Foundation of a Chriftian Charity. It is not a fmgle Duty, a narrow or confin’d Prin¬ ciple 5 but an univerfal and extenfive Duty of Religion, arifing from the Obligations we are fenfible we lye under to our great Creator, and our gracious Redeemer, thereby teaching us, to love God for his own fake, to love our Brother for God’s fake. It is a Principle which carries an univerfal Influence through all our Chriftian Performance, for fays St. *Paul (k), Though I fpeak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am beco77ie as founding brafs, or a tinkling cymbal. Though I have the gift of prophecy, and underfland all myfteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, fo that I could remove mountains, and have no charity, I am nothing. Though 1 bejlaw all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it pro- fiteth me nothing.
