Description
Documentary on the discovery of sugar-mimetic compounds and on recent glycobiological research in Britain, the U.S. and the Netherlands into the potential of "sugar mimics" to serve as the basis for new drug treatments for AIDS. Features the work of Dr. Linda Fellows (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew), Dr. Stanley Tyms (MRC), Prof. Raymond Dwek (Oxford) and Dr. Abraham Carpas (Cambridge) on DNJ (deoxynojirimycin), obtained from the leaves of the black mulberry tree, and butyl-DNJ, and the difficulties encountered by Mosanto Searle in organizing a clinical trial of butyl-DNJ.
