    Gilbert's Improved Apparatus for Dental Purposes. well understood, similar chairs having been made before, and therefore the same is not claimed by me. The Drawings shew the shape of the back of a chair which I use. I prefer to employ ordinary forceps for extracting teeth, such as are bent at right angles, being the most convenient for use; and the 5 operator having caused the person to recline back in the chair, and set the instrument d so as to come between the jaws when not for a front tooth, as before stated, takes hold of the tooth by the forceps, which instrument will rest on the bearing d. He will then cause the forceps to move on the bear¬ ing df as on a fulcrum, by which the forceps will be caused to act as a lever 10 in lifting the tooth out of the lower jaw; and in case the tooth to be extracted is in the upper jaw, then the forceps will come below the bearing d> and draw the tooth downwards out of the jaw. The instrument d and also d1 when used is covered with any soft fabric or substance. I will now describe the second part of my Invention. Figures 4, 5, and 6, 15 shew an improved instrument particularly intended for drawing out the stumps of teeth. It consists of a fixed and moveable claw, one to go on either side of the stump of a tooth. The moveable claw is to be pressed on by a finger or thumb of the operator; and the stump of a tooth being thus held between the two claws and the stem of the instrument resting on a fixed fulcrum, as 20 described in respect to the first part of my Invention, the operator will readily extract the stump. Where the stump is such as to require it, the gum is to be lanced to allow of the claws descending to take hold. I would remark that this instrument is very similar, in respect to the moveable claw, to what has before been used, and is commonly called the key instrument; but in 25 such former instrument there was no fixed claw used in such manner as to hold the stump of a tooth between two claws as in the present instrument. Having thus described the nature of my Invention, and the manner in which the same is to be performed, I would have it understood that I do not confine myself to the details as herein shewn and described ; but what I 30 claim is,— First, the improvements herein described for extracting teeth, whereby a fixed bearing is employed to rest the extracting instrument on or against, as explained ; and, Secondly, I claim the improved instrument or apparatus herein described. 35 In witness whereof, I, the said Henry Gilbert, have hereunto set my hand and seal, this Eighteenth day of October, in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and forty-eight.
