World Population : Report on South East Asia

Description

A film about population control starting with a discussion between a mother-to-be and a nurse and then teaming people in Asia in shanty towns and cities. Many of the countries with the largest growing populations do have active family planning programmes. Different people across diffferent countries in Asia demonstrate birth control techniques. More novel methods of promoting contraception are indicated (parades, a plastic bag over an ear of corn to indicate the efficacy of condoms). It is suggested that local methods of communication can be more effective (the co-operation of traditional midwives) than imposing Western practices wholescale. Folk media, puppets and songs have been found to be effective. New media (television and especially radio) are seen to capture the attention of many people. Abortion is problematic and culturally sensitive. Men are part of the problem by not wishing to use contraception. To promote vasectomy, a man has an operation and feels fine. Java has population saturation and has relocated families to Sumatra at great cost. A woman's voice speaks for all women who have experienced the lack of choice in childbearing. The message is that development and social justice are key in terms of allocating resources to all babies.
