About this work

Description

This is a plain chest x-ray from a young child that developed empyema as a complication of community acquired pneumonia. There is a whiteout of the right lung and obvious displacement of the mediastinum to the left. The shadow that can be seen on the left hand side is the heart which has been pushed far over to this side. A chest drain was inserted which drained thick purulent fluid, confirming the diagnosis of empyema.
