    from the mere fcholar. It is, of all men- tal employments, the molt difficult, the mod liable to error, and yet the mod va- luable when well accomplished. It is the abridgment of fa&s and fimplification of all knowledge. Experience and obferva- tion teach us a vaft crowd of fa6ts. We multiply thefe by analyzing them; in ana- lyzing them we generally obtain a know- ledge of the caufes of a number of their properties, and often of the caufe of their production; and we are thus enabled to reduce a number of effecls under a few general principles. Hence the utility of this procefs. But that it is a procefs which is often dange- rous, and even hurtful to fcience, mull alfo be admitted. It is dangerous when we try to reduce general principles under principles ftill more general, or, as it were, to find out the ultimate fource of all our knowledge; for where are the facls to guide us in fuch a refearch^ The ulti- mate
