    CHAPTER XI GENERAL SURVEY It is wise to take stock of the gains and losses that accompany any enterprise of some duration. In education our regular examinations used to be regarded as more or less satisfactory instruments for this purpose. But of late we are not so sure, and educational folk are getting more and more interested in the finished product, and are beginning to investigate the young people who have completed a full secondary course. Of course we must take account of the whole personality of the boy or girl of eighteen who has just left school, but, for our present purpose, we are naturally most interested in the mental-content that the finished young person shows as the result of the long course of training. Fortunately for our purpose, French educationists are paying special attention to this aspect, and some of them have made inquiries that have produced very depressing results. The investigators have been appalled at the completeness with which the facts that have been laboriously instilled into the minds of the young people have disappeared.
