View from pier or boat towards land looking towards the east. The street is known as the Praya or Des Voeux Road. The building on the right is the office of Jardine, Matheson & Co. The one next door is the office of Dent & Co., their chief rival in the opium trade. Similar view to Thomson's negative number 31

This is one of a collection of same-size contact prints made, in 1981, from John Thomson's original negatives. The glass negatives, made between 1868 and 1872, were purchased from Thomson by Sir Henry Wellcome in 1921 and are now in the Wellcome Institute Library
