About this work

Description

This cow has been tethered in an open shelter close to the living quarters of this Tanzanian household. Cattle dung is clearly visible around the shelter. Cattle dung is one of the primary breeding sites for the flies which transmit trachoma, an infectious eye disease that can lead to blindness. People living in this environment should be advised of simple methods to minimise fly breeding. Householders should be encouraged to construct solid, easy to clean floors in animal shelters, and to clean up the dung daily. Ideally each community should agree the chosen solution.
