Biographical note
Health Concern was an organisation founded in the mid 1980s (1984 to 1985) with the primary aims of 'campaigning for more resources, co-ordinate comment on Government plans for the NHS and exchange information on research.'
It was set up by Lord Ennals (Minister of State for Health, 1968) and chaired by Sir Douglas Black (former chairman of the BMA, 1984-1985). It was an organisation that represented a broad alliance of somewhat diverse member organisations with the mutual aim of supporting the NHS by promoting the basic principles of the NHS and mounting an educational programme on health care and treatment.
The member organisations consisted of professional organisations, trade unions and patient and voluntary organisations. Membership was divided into two categories: member organisations (whose representatives made up the executive committee) and observer organisations. Membership was by subscription.
