About this work

Description

Dr Alice Stewart completes her presentation about her research to date explaining her involvement in the campaign. She answers questions and then her colleague from the UK, George Kneale, explains what is meant by measured doses of radiation (in order to assess an individual's personal risk). They then answer questions about the concerns of the residents over the dairy cattle which graze freely in front of the facility and whether the milk is being independently analysed for contamination. Anecdotal evidence of the increased risk of miscarriage in the community is mentioned as well as the incidence of childhood cancer (a child is mentioned, who lost a limb; a tissue sample is discovered to have 100 times more than background radiation). Mortality from cancers in the locality of the plant is raised. Ends abruptly; go to Part 3.

Part 2 of 3; an informally shot meeting of FRESH; Fernald Residents for Environmental Safety and Health. This meeting was attended by Dr Alice Stewart, aged 83 at the time, who explains her involvement on the board, which was commissioned to produce an independent assessment of the health risks of low level radiation around this facility. (She was an honorary member of the department of social medicine at the University of Birmingham, UK.) This footage was captured at the point where the plant is being decommissioned. The authorities are tackling social and environmental repercussions amidst growing dismay over the long term health effects from local residents and former employees.
