About this work

Description

Fols. 1-33 contain 66 etchings believed to be by or after Matthaus Merian for an edition of Johann Philipp Abelin, Theatrum europaeum. The etching on fol. 16r above seems to show the Gunpowder plot, and one on fol. 33 shows the second Defenestration of Prague (with the window on the viewer's left, unlike some editions). Fols. 34-67 contain 34 etchings of fortifications, besieging instruments, battle formations etc. etched by M. Pool, possibly ca. 1725

Creator/production credits

Possibly compiled in part by Ann Corbould, wife of John Corbould of 8 Dove Lane Norwich (bapt. 1720); or their daughter Ann (1766-1843): the last flyleaf (originally the first) bears the signature "Anne Corbould". The prints which were pasted in the album in the same orientation as her signature have been removed. The prints of fortifications bear the stamp of the Library of the Royal United Service Institution, the name which the present Royal United Services Institute adopted in 1860: presumably these were added to the album later
