I / THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC HEALTH , COMMITTEE ^dam Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, I I have the honour to present my seventh Annual Report, namely that J 1948, on the health of the residents of the City of Chichester. The report has been prepared in accordance with the Ministry of Health cular, 3/49, which requested that it should be prepared on the lines of it for the year 1947, and indicated that certain duties of the department )uld be specifically reported upon. I would like to draw your attention to the following indices of the leral state of health in the City, and I again ask you to bear in mind that a City such as Chichester with a relatively small population, a slight 'iation in the numbers of births, deaths, etc., will tend to be reflected proportionately in the resultant rates per thousand. I BIRTHS AND BIRTHRATE. There has been a slight increase in the number of births for the year 18. namely 329 as compared with 311 for 1947. The resultant birthrates ling 18.38 and 18.16 respectively per thousand of the population. The rate 1948 for England and Wales was 17.9. It will be observed that there was a considerable natural increase in 1? population, i.e., the difference between births and deaths, of 141 (329 ths minus 188 deaths). This natural increase can, to a large extent, be tributed to the very low deathrate for 1948 (see paragraph below on deaths). The number of illegitimate births for 1948 was 10 as compared with 19 i 1947 and 35 in 1946. DEATHS AND DEATHRATE. The number of deaths in 1948 was 188 as compared with 231 in 1947, p rates respectively being 10.5 and 13.4 per thousand of the population. |ie deathrate for England and Wales was 10.8. It will be noted that the number of deaths for 1948 (188) was well below € figure for 1947, even though there has been a considerable increase in e Registrar General’s estimated population of the City (from 17,120 for '47 to 17,900 for 1948). The rate for the City of 10.5 for the year under view is the lowest recorded since the year 1937.
