    suture, after it had cleansed itself; the fragments found exit through the nasal fossa, after the cheek was fully healed. An extensive loss of substance from the upper jaw-bone, including five teeth, healed without leaving communication between the nose and mouth. Balls remaining in the antrum Highmorianum often give rise to no accidents, as the wound heals rapidly over them. In one instance the flattened bullet came to the surface under the mucous membrane of the fossa canina three months later, and was removed by incision. GUNSHOT INJURIES OF THE VERTEBRAL COLUMN. Injuries of the spinal processes frequently occurred with- out serious consequences—without accidents from concus- sion of the spinal marrow. A case where the posterior portions of the fifth and sixth cervical vertebrae were torn away by a bullet ended fatally on the fifth day; after paral- ysis of the lower extremities, occurring on the first day, complete paralysis of the arms had become superadded. In two cases the cervical vertebrae were contused by a bul- let, which had entered on the outer side of the sterno-inas- toid, and had also bruised the brachial plexus ; the paralysis of the arm of the corresponding side was at first so com- plete that I considered the brachial plexus must have been torn by the bullet; but gradually sensation and motion re- turned almost fully. In one of the cases the phrenic nerve must have been contused, for during eight days great dysp- noea was present, and the patient was obliged to remain in the sitting posture; it was at first supposed that the lung was injured, but there were no physical changes on the cor- responding side of the chest. In a case of contusion of the cervical vertebras by a similar shot, there has remained till this moment—a period of four months—stiffness aud pain of the neck on motion.
