    I Again, if one or two notes are tied up by the sign of j handhani, but are not marked with the sign of mdtrd, ] the sign of mdtrd falls upon a separate note placed after them. In such a case, the note on which the sign of mdtrd or time is given, embraces its previous notes in ithe same proportion of time; e. g., CD E Sometimes, the sign of mdtrd falls upon an empty place—a place where there is no note. In such a case, time must be allowed up to that vacant place; e. g., I C D E E . / TALA. Erom simple, compound, and broken mdtrds are ! formed tdlas, the only object of which is to calculate i the measure of beating time. They are in use amongst I us in both vocal and instrumental music. It is to music what metre is to poetry. Tdlas derive different names from the variety of mdtrds that form them ; e. g., four j mdtrdstdla,ii^mQdi drutatritdll; ei^iimadhy j mdna ; six, chautdla^ &c., &c. / ! ; Tdla consists of two principal actions ; viz., dghdta I and hirdma—the beating and the rest. / \ I The sign of dghdta or beating (^) is placed upon the I sign of mdtrd.
