    TO THE EXAMIiSTATIONS AT THE KOYAL COLLEGE OF SURGEONS OF ENGLAND, FOR THE DIPLOMAS OF MEMBER AND FELLOW. No one disputes the national importance of the Royal College of Surgeons, as the central home of biological science in this country—a science which represents the structure and functions of organised beings in health and disease, and the laws relating thereto. The possession of an absolutely unrivalled Museum of Anatomy—human, comparative, physiological, and pathological—has long since rendered it simply impossible for any other institu- tion to overtake the College in its vast material resources for lenching the science of life ; and systematic exposi- tions of these resources by Professors Owen, Quekett, Huxley, and Flower, have, for a long period of years, attracted the profession in this and from foreign countries, with men of science in general, as students of Hunter's grand conception. Periodic Orations have commemorated this epoch in the history of natural science. At the same time, the successive advancements and aspects of modern Surgery have been exhibited in yearly short courses of original Lectures by some of the most distinguished Sur- geons, past and present. But now it is desirable, and can- not be uninteresting, to inquire into what the College, as an Exatidiiinfj Board, has done meanwhile, and is doing, to sustain and extend the educational character of the Pro- fession, and to protect the just rights of the Public in regard to the qualifications of men who are licensed to practise Surgery.
