About this work

Description

Hand-drawn illustration using ink and watercolour on paper. 'Pills' depicts a female patient with her head tipped back, swallowing an assortment of different sized tablets and pills. A yellow arrow indicates the path the medication will take through the body. Following hip-replacement surgery, the artist recorded her experiences and emotions during her post-operative recovery. Both before and after the operation, the artist's life seemed to be dominated by the routines imposed by pill taking. These included pain relief, anti-inflammatories, vitamin supplements, and sleeping pills.
