Uses the composition of a painting by Frans van Mieris, (formerly?) in Dresden, the same size as the present painting, of a painter in his studio. In the present painting, alchemical equipment has replaced the string instrument in the left foreground and a skeleton has replaced a portrait on the easel. Possibly painted by "Wilkes", a restorer and painter of historical pastiches
