About this work

Getting a shot

Description

The front poacher, who is seen from behind, hides below the brow of a hill, holds up a sprig of gorse for camouflage and has the gun. He wears plaid. He and the next man wear Tam o'Shanters. A third man holds back a dog. "In the same year [1831] Landseer exhibited two outdoor poaching scennes ... Getting a shot (Sotheby Parke-Bernet, New York, May 14 1976, lot 63), the latter with portraits of two famous poachers, Charles Mackintosh and Malcolm Clarke" (Ormond, loc. cit). Mackintosh and Clarke are presumably the second and third men, whose faces are visible: they are concealed from their prey by crouching behind a rock
