    to the albumen, but also that the other elements might be oxidized and carried off. In my first experiments I used blood from which the fibrin had been carefully whipped during the period of its coagulation, so that the serum might contain as many blood-cells as possible, upon the supposition that the cells would afford a large amount of surface to the action of the gas. The serum, after being whipped, was permitted to stand for twenty-four hours, that any fibrin which it might contain, and which had not coagulated during the process of whipping, might do so. The apparatus used in all cases will be easily under- stood by referring to the annexed diagram.
