About this work

Description

This documentary examines the illicit heroin trade in Britain and tells how enormous sums of money are made in dealing in heroin. Police, addicts and dealers are interviewed and also a man convicted of the brutal murder of a drug addict in Glasgow. Some of the real events (such as a customs heist) in the documentary are dramatised for the purposes of the programme. A spokesman from the US claims that Britain will follow America. He argues that the problem has greatly increased as a result of the government's policy of restricting the licensing of heroin via approved doctors thereby creating a dramatic shortfall in supply. The possibility for high profits has meant that serious crime has became involved in the importation and distribution of heroin. The cost of heroin has meant that there is a crime wave associated with addiction with suppliers using violence to extort money from them.
