About this work

Description

In the context of the 20th century history of ante-natal and postnatal care in the Rhondda, "Special Delivery" expresses the determination of ordinary Rhondda women to maintain a locally-based system of continuous ante- and postnatal care run by midwives. The status of the midwife is reviewed with reference to the 1902 Act and to the 1947 Act which resulted in the transfer of much ante-natal care to G.P.s and set the trend for hospital births. The film conveys most forcefully the deep committment of midwives and patients of the Rhondda to keep childbirth safely in the home and within the control of women, well away from the intervention of male doctors and their high-tech gadgets.
