    This exercise can be done with a swing or slowly, always taking care that the rest of the body remains in a quiet upright position. Exercises with the Pole or Staff. One can practice a variety of exercises with a pole; naturally in these the arms are most occupied though now and again the legs take part. The pole used is generally of wood, except a very strong person wishes it of iron: its length should be a yard and a half. These exercises are more for the healthy than for invalids except the latter be merely weak from poverty of blood or as a result of former illness. In beginning the exercises hold the staff horizontally before you with arms stretched downwards: the hands are equally distant from the body and so turned that the back of the hand is towards the front.
