Biographical note
Scottish geologist. LLD, FGS. Contributed greatly to the understanding of carboniferous fossils in the West of Scotland. Became Assistant Keeper of Geology at the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow, in 1858. Was also Professor of Natural History at the University of Glasgow.
