    the method adopted by Sauvages, who often con- siders a certain assemblage of symptoms as suf- ficient to distinguish a species or genus, although they may be only a small part of those which constitute the true disease, and may leave another assemblage, equally important, to be arranged in a separate part of the system. The form of glandular disease, which approaches the nearest in its symptoms to consumption, and which is the most frequently complicated with it, is the tabes mesenterica, or mesenteric decline. The mesenteric decline is generally preceded by more or less of headache, languor, and want of appetite ; it is more immediately distinguished by acute pain in the back and loins, by fullness, and as the disease advances, pain and tenderness of the abdomen; these symptoms are accom- panied, or succeeded, by a chalky appearance and want of consistency in the alvine evacuations, as if the chyle were rejected by the absorbents, and left in the form of a milky fluid in the intes- tines, and the functions of the liver were at the same time impaired, the natural tinge of the bile being wanting: the evacuations are also sometimes mixed with mucus and blood, and are attended by pain, irritation, and tenesmus, somewhat re- sembling those which occur in a true dysentery.
