Description

Saint Agatha suffered martyrdom by having her breasts cut off with hot shears. Here she clutches her mutilated breasts as an angel approaches her with an ointment jar. "Sainte Agathe visitée dans la prison par un ange, qui lui apporte des médicamens pour guérir son sein qu'on lui a abbatu, & qu'elle couvre d'un linge. De grands clairs opposés à de grandes masses d'ombres produisent un bel effet de clair-obscur dans ce tableau, et développent le vrai caractere du Guerchin" -- Mariette, op. cit., p. 4
